Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a secure way to fill gaps and help restore your smile if you have missing or damaged teeth. A crown can also help you bite and chew better, which can positively impact other systems in your body, such as your digestive system. Dental crowns, also known as caps, provide long-lasting, durable protection for teeth that have been damaged, decayed, or were treated with root canal therapy.

At Fairfax Family Dental, we offer both traditional on natural piece, as well as implant-supported crowns from our Fairfax, VA office. We offer CareCredit® financing to make covering any out-of-pocket costs more affordable for our patients. Our dentists have more than 30 years of experience with this common restorative dental procedure and use the highest quality materials and state-of-the-art technology to provide our patients with beautiful, natural looking crowns.

What are Dental Crowns?

There are two types of crowns: traditional dental crowns and implant crowns. Traditional dental crowns are essentially a cap that cover that your dentist puts on a tooth to protect damaged or decayed teeth. Dental implant crowns are a long-lasting restoration that, with proper care, can protect and preserve the underlying tooth for years.

Implant crowns serve a different purpose. Instead of repairing a damaged tooth, they replace a single missing tooth. The dental implant is surgically inserted into the jawbone and the crown attaches to the implant abutment. An implant crown fills a gap that has been left following a tooth extraction and preserves the underlying bone structure.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

You may need a dental crown if you:

  • Have a tooth that is cracked, worn down or otherwise weakened
  • Have a cavity that is too large for a filling
  • Need to cover a dental implant
  • Have a missing tooth and need a bridge
  • Have had a root canal, the crown will protect the tooth
  • Want to cover a discolored or badly shaped tooth and improve your smile

What Should I Expect During the Procedure?

First, one of our dentists will perform a thorough free initial examination, which may include x-rays, to evaluate the extent of the damage. Once we determine if you are a good candidate for a dental crown, we will review your treatment plan.

Once patients are comfortable and numb or under anxiolysis (nitrous oxide), the dentist will begin by removing any parts of the tooth that are damaged or decayed. Then, he will carefully reshape the remaining tooth structure to create adequate space for the crown.

After reshaping the tooth, we will take impressions, which will be used to create your custom-fitting crown. It can take up to two weeks to create your restoration, so we will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth in between visits. When we receive the dental crown from the lab, we have you return to our Fairfax, VA office and your dentist will cement the final crown in place.
